Johannesburg Women's Peace Train
As Part of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD)

The Women's Peace Train to the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg started in Kampala, Uganda on August 15th and it ran through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana, and finally to Johannesburg, South Africa in time for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) on 25th August 2002.

The objectives of the Women's Peace Train was to carry a peace torch from the war torn Great Lakes Region to Johannesburg and use the torch as a symbol for peace. The peace torch was passed on with a strong message to the continent leaders, men, women, and children. The torch passed through different countries in which African women want peace and stability for their children and future generations. They also called upon the ringleaders and perpetrators of these wars to end them forthwith.

The women of Africa took this responsibility because women bear the brunt of war and saw the WSSD a good opportunity to campaign for the end of war in Africa. The Peace Train passed on the message of peace to the people of Africa and to the rest of the world.

Conclusion
Many people shared the message of peace. Women realized their role in bringing about peace and were stimulated to start thinking about peace as a prerequisite for development.
