National Association of Women Organisations in Uganda (NAWOU)

Programming

NAWOU works with and supports rural based subsistence agriculture women's communities. The women organize into groups to carry out activities of income generation, for example: they sell crafts and surplus food crops when available. NAWOU gives training on how to improve on their livelihoods.

NAWOU needs relevant and appropriate information to share with their membership. As the majority of the women that we work with are barely literate, there is always need to repackage the information to a level it can be used in rural areas, in form of posters or translated materials.

NAWOU therefore needs to be the resources to train not only staff, but the leaders of women's groups who stay in the communities to reach out to more people.

Program on Domestic Violence

NAWOU is working in partnership with Action Aid Uganda and Raising Voices on this new program. We are committed to working in partnership with community members to prevent domestic violence.

Community leaders and members, the police, and health care workers identify that violence is a problem in our homes and communities. This violence has consequences for families and the community. NAWOU, in partnership with the community, is committed to working to promote safety within our homes.

We aim to work in partnership with grassroots community members, leaders and professionals to increase understanding of domestic violence and its harmful effects on women, men and children in our community. We aim to initiate a change in the attitudes and behaviors that contribute to domestic violence.

NAWOU is committed to investing time and energy within Kawempe Division. NAWOU will facilitate a long-term process of community mobilization, which involves:
  • A Community Assessment to gather information on attitudes and beliefs about violence in the home.
  • Raising Awareness within the general community and various professional sectors of domestic violence and its negative consequences on family and community life.
  • Building Networks of support, action and strength within general community members and various professional sectors that empower and enable individuals to take action and make change to prevent violence against women.
  • Integrating Action against domestic violence into everyday life and systematically within institutions.
  • The consolidation of programs and activities working against domestic violence to ensure their sustainability, continued growth and progress.
All women, men and children have a right to live free of violence. We believe that all members of the community have a responsibility to make our homes and communities safe. This is what makes NAWOU's program different.
